ONCOLOGY SUPPORT PROGRAMS
The Decatur General Oncology Center treats thousands of cancer patients each year. One individual patient at a time. Our mind, body and spirit approach means we support the whole person, not just the body. Here are just a few of the multi-team resources we offer to you and your family as you journey toward long-term wellness.
Camp Bluebird
Get away from the world for a moment and gain the perspective of people living, fighting and dealing with this disease. This three-day, two-night camp offers a unique bonding experience for adult cancer patients, and is the only camp of its kind in North Alabama. Sponsored by Decatur General, Telephone Pioneers of America and Decatur General Foundation, camp activities include intimate discussions regarding both personal and medical concerns, emotional support, lifestyle adjustments, coping strategies and learning how to give and receive family support.
Bosom Buddies
This support group for women who have had breast cancer provides an understanding atmosphere for women to discuss their concerns, make informed decisions and regain a sense of control over their lives.
Ladies' Lunch
Sometimes, just knowing another person has been there is comfort enough. Join this open, friendly support network of women cancer survivors and share some “me” time. The group meets for lunch each month in area restaurants to share experiences, reconnect and uplift the soul.
Partner's Meal
This program is a support network for breast surgery patients and their significant others and meets once a month at a local restaurant. The group allows patients to talk with people who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, breast cancer and allows them to share how they deal with it.
Recovery in Motion
If you thought routine exercise was tough, just try getting back in the swing of things while you are living with or recovering from cancer. This eight-week class, led by a licensed physical therapy assistant, promotes safe exercise for all cancer survivors. Participants work toward regaining strength and endurance, as well as challenging their bodies and their minds to be their very best.
American Cancer Society's Look Good, Feel Better
When you love the way you look, it’s easier to love the way you feel. Designed expressly for women, this program enables patients to maintain and improve their self-image during cancer treatment. Topics of discussion include cosmetics, skin care, and using hats and scarves to manage hair loss.
American Cancer Society's I Can Cope
With the Decatur General Oncology Center, no one ever faces cancer alone. This support network brings together the wisdom, emotions and insights of individuals who are living with cancer. By sharing their stories and facing their fears, we can all work together to solve problems and manage anxieties. Sponsored by Decatur General Oncology Center and the American Cancer Society, each program features a different topic and speaker.
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
Each year, Decatur General sponsors several teams in Relay for Life, the major cancer fund-raising project in Morgan County. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society, and raise awareness of this disease within our community. To participate, contact the Decatur General Oncology Center.
Survivor’s Dinner
Annual event held in conjunction with Relay for Life; is a celebration of life for cancer patients and their families. Attendees enjoy dinner, entertainment, and survivor’s testimonials.
