FOUNDATION FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGNS
Decatur General, growing with the community, is constantly expanding in effort to ensure that community health needs are met. Decatur General Foundation, by raising funds for hospital expansions, services and new equipment, helps make this happen.
The Strength Within
To meet this increasing need of cancer patients in our community, Decatur General has expanded our oncology services these services. Our current Oncology Center opened in 1986 and since its inception has seen 10,500 patients and delivered more treatments.
The Foundation Board unanimously voted to seek $3 million in charitable contributions for the new equipment needs of the Center. To date, more than $2 million has been raised toward this campaign. More than 500 Decatur General employees pledged $485,000 toward this campaign. This overwhelming support from our employees once again demonstrates the dedication, loyalty and commitment of our staff. This recent campaign brings total giving from our employees to the Foundation to more than $1 million.
Equipment needs for this project include:
- Two linear accelerators
- One accelerator equipped with IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) capabilities
- Wellhoffer scanner
- Eclipse work station
- Portal vision
- 4-D treatment console
- Portal dosimetry package
- Respiratory gating package.
This new equipment and technology will allow more cancer patients to have their treatment here instead of traveling out of town.
George W. Hansberry, MD Scholarship Endowment Fund
In honor of his life-long devotion to service, the Decatur General Foundation is pleased to announce the George W. Hansberry, MD Endowed Scholarship Fund. Once established, the Fund will support educational opportunities for those in our community pursuing a medical career.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hansberry believed that better education makes better citizens, and better citizens make better communities. It’s an idea that inspired him to a life of tireless service and constant giving. It’s a dream that cost him much—and earned us everything. And as people inspired by Dr. Hansberry, it is our mission to uphold it.
Join us as we continue his legacy for generations to come. Pledge your gift now to the George W. Hansberry, MD Scholarship Endowment Fund, and help us further his vision of service through education. With your help, there’s no telling how many lives we might impact. And through their success, we all prosper.
Our Next Generation
Although this campaign is completed, the Foundation still accepts donations for the Kermit Pitt, MD Pediatric Center. If you would like to make a gift to pediatrics and invest in the future of the children in this community, please click the make a donation link.
Pledges from this campaign helped build our Oncology Center in 1987. This cancer center is one of the few in Alabama with a certified medical dosimetrist and a board-certified medical physicist. Providing state-of-the-art technology and compassionate care, the staff of this Center has touched thousands of lives.
This campaign, which began in 1990, helped fund our Cardiac Catheterization Lab, enabling us to provide cardiac catheterizations and other procedures, such as stent implants, as outpatient procedures in the hospital.
Spirit of Life
Two areas that touch thousands of lives, our Women's Center and Emergency Department expansion, were made possible from pledges from the Spirit of Life campaign, which began in 1997. We greatly appreciate the generosity of our many donors. Due to their faithfulness in giving, Decatur General has been able to provide many new and much needed services to the community. We recognize our donors in areas throughout the hospital. Our main donor wall is located in the main lobby of the hospital, our donor wall, from the "Our Next Generation" campaign, is located on the fourth floor, near the Kermit Pitt, MD Pediatric Center. The Strength Within donors are recognized with pavers in the Serenity Garden located on the east side of the Oncology Center.
