Cancer care services at the Decatur General Oncology Center continue to maintain innovative technology. In 1999, the Oncology Center purchased Picker/Marconi ACQPlan. This radiation physics computer software program is used to calculate dose histograms, 3-D tumor volume dose distribution and reconstruction. This new software, linked with the ACQSim CT scanner, allows the radiation oncologist, physicist and dosimetrist to visualize new ways to treat cancer. With this new technology, the radiation oncologist can visualize tumor volumes in three dimensions and prescribe treatment plans to maximize radiation dose to the cancer cells while minimizing the side effects associated with treatment to normal surrounding organs and tissues. The Decatur General Oncology Center was the first cancer center in North Alabama to offer this type of treatment to patients. In 1999, the radiation oncology department consulted 303 new patients, administered 7,520 treatments and saw 7,371 patients in follow-up.

Realizing that a healthy mental outlook is as important as the physical healing of the body during cancer treatment, the Decatur General Oncology Center also sponsors a variety of community programs to educate mental wellness for cancer patients and their families. Programs include Camp Bluebird, Coping with Cancer, Look Good-Feel Better, Bosom Buddies, Man to Man, Pulmonary Pals, Celebration of Life and Relay for Life. The Decatur General Oncology Center is proud to support these fun, educational programs for the cancer patient.

As we look to a new millenium, the Decatur General Oncology Center continues to strive for innovative technology, balanced with the gentle touch and compassion of our dedicated cancer care professionals.
