The field of medical oncology has continued to evolve over the past year. Treatment protocols for some of the more difficult cancers to treat have become available, such as for hormone refractory prostate cancer. Our treatments for advanced lung, breast, colon and ovarian cancer continue to improve, allowing our patients to live longer and with better quality of life. Immunotherapy, which has been developed with a greater understanding of the molecular processes that occur when cancers form, is now being combined with chemotherapy routinely in breast cancer and lymphoma, and soon these strategies will expand to other types of cancer. In addition to better, more tolerable treatments, improvements in supportive care continues. Ethyol has recently been approved to help with radiation and chemotherapy side-effects. Our cancer program continues to be strong, with involvement of multiple specialties and with a dedicated, caring staff. At Decatur General Oncology Center, we take pride in offering the best care in cancer treatment to patients in our community.
