There were 602 cancer cases added to the database in the year 2000 with 533 analytical (new) cases. The two most prevalent primary sites were breast cancer with 135 cases and lung cancer with a total of 74 analytical cases. This year, the lung cancer cases are divided with 63 large cell and 11 small cell lung cancers accessioned. Also included in this year's report are five-year survival rates for breast, lung, prostate, colon and rectal cancer. Urologist, Paul Zbell, MD, has graciously rendered his expertise to the in-depth study on prostate cancer.
Cancer Data Management statistics are always submitted to the National Cancer Data Base of American College of Surgeons. Assistance is given to the Cancer Committee with data collection for Patient Care Evaluation Studies and Continuous Quality Improvement Studies.
Follow-up on each analytical case is accomplished on an annual basis with follow-up letters and new information added to the patient's database.
The accuracy of the data is continually monitored. Changes and corrections are made on a daily basis. The database is updated as new information is collected. The Cancer Data Management goals are to provide accurate and accessible data on pathology, treatment modalities and outcomes.
