The breast surgery education program, established in 1997, continues to provide education for breast cancer patients admitted for lumpectomy, mastectomy or breast reconstruction. Patients receive written information and verbal education to help prepare them for the surgery and for dealing with breast cancer.
Breast cancer survivors who volunteer with the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program make visits to patients and provide them with written information about breast cancer, a bra and a prosthesis, when applicable. These volunteers may so provide emotional support from the perspective of someone who has been there.
The STRETCH exercise program for post-surgery breast cancer patients continues in six-week sessions led by a licensed physical therapy assistant. This program is designed to encourage restoration of full range of motion and function in the arm on the side of the patient where the surgery is performed.
The Bosom Buddies support group continues to meet on the third Monday evening of each month. Average attendance is 15-20 women. Participants have had lumpectomy, mastectomy, and/or reconstruction, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or hormonal therapy or no adjuvant treatment. Many of the women are involved in community cancer programs such as Relay for Life and Camp Bluebird. A monthly newsletter about upcoming meetings and support groups is sent to approximately 200 people in Morgan, Lawrence and Limestone counties.
Partner's Meal is a support network for breast surgery patients and their significant others. This group meets the Thursday following the Bosom Buddies support group at local restaurants. The group allows patients to talk with people who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, breast cancer and allows them to share how they deal with it.
